Musical Opportunities @ SUMC
Sonshine Singers: Pre-K and Kindergarten - This youngest group of singers meets every Wednesday 5:00-5:30 in the third Sunday School room located near the west portico. They sing in worship about 3 times per year.
Terrific Singers (Gr1-2) and Young Musicians (Gr 3-4): These children meet as a part of the Wednesday After-School program from 3:30-5:15pm each week. They are transported from school(s) in vans, given refreshments, and then offered Bible-related activities, games, and a choir time. These choirs sing for worship throughout the year and participate in seasonal programs.
The EDGE (Gr5-6): This group of "tweenagers" meets on Sundays from 4:45-7:15pm. They are offered the following activities during this 2.5 hours of group time: mission study, bible study, games, supper, choir, stick ministry, drama, and dance.
Youth Choir (Gr 7-12): Sundays are reserved for youth! This choir meets from 4:45-5:45pm in the choir room and sings for worship throughout the year. These singers work on a variety of musical styles, traditional anthem literature as well as contemporary Christian music accompanied by guitars and percussion. The highlight of the year for this group (Gr 7-12) is an annual tour (in early June) to different areas of the country. The choir sings for churches, stays in church family homes, and is involved in mission-outreach work projects.
*Our children/youth groupings are based on actual school grades.
Prime Timers (age 55 ...): These singers are in the prime of life! They enjoy meeting every Wednesday 10:30-11:30am in the F. Hall to share together and to sing the "old" gospel favorites. This group has an active nursing home ministry and also enjoys a monthly lunch together. The purpose of this "non-performing" choir is to have fun and fellowship and to lift the spirits of nursing home residents.
Festival Ringers: This group meets on Tuesdays from 5:15-6:15pm in the choir room. They ring handbells for worship, nursing homes, and civic organizations. No music reading skills are required but are helpful.
Children's Handbells: This choir is designed for children in grades 3-6 and meets on Tuesdays from 3:30-4:30pm in the choir room. The children study music theory, play musical games and learn to play handbells. They participate in worship about 4 times a year and play for local nursing homes as well.
Adult Choir: These dedicated volunteer musicians rehearse on Wednesdays from 7:00-8:30pm. A nursery is provided. The singers are made up of trained musicians as well as those who want to make a joyful noise. No auditions are required. Choir members just need to come expecting to have a fun time with other fellow Christians. This choir leads in the 11am worship service and presents larger choral works for Advent, Lent, and Easter.
Liturgical Dance Group: This group of 7-12th grade girls meets on Wednesdays at 7pm in the sanctuary. Caroline McDaniel and Anna Register co-direct these girls. They dance about 4-5 times throughout the church year and add a wonderful visual element to worship.
