Rev. J.D. AnthonyThe Rev. James Danelly Anthony served the congregation of the Sandersville Methodist Episcopal Church twice, but is best remembered as the Civil War pastor who ministered to the entire town throughout this conflict. His encounter with General Sherman in November of 1864 during the infamous March to the Sea is documented in his autobiography, Life and Times of Rev. J.D. Anthony: An Autobiography with a Few Original Sermons. The chapter concerning his ministry in Sandersville begins on page 126. This book has been digitized and is available for reading online at two different sites: Google Books, and Galileo’s Digital Library of Georgia. An historical marker stands in the Old City Cemetery in Sandersville, at the corner of West Church Street and Virginia Avenue, next to the Anthony gravesite. Rev. Anthony, along with his first wife, Emily Baugh Anthony, and one of his daughters, Mattie, are buried there. This marker was restored in 2010 by Tonia Marynell, and stands to remind passersby of the compassionate love, spiritual guidance, and abiding faith of one of the greatest pastors of Methodism.
